Global warming. Clear cuts. Ecosystem and watershed damage. Habitat destruction and no wild beauty in sight. Egads! These are serious topics that can be overwhelming and enough to make you a bit numb.

| Middlebury Colleges Bicentennial Hall is the largest academic structure in the US to use FSC-certified wood. The award-winning building was designed by Payette Associates of Boston, MA. |
What tangible step can you take to
protect forests?
Specify certified wood in your projects. Along with the contemporary credo
to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, this is one of the most powerful things
you can do to change the way wood products are harvested and sold around the
world.
Certification was developed by the Forest Stewardship Council as a proactive, market-based solution to a growing ecological crisis. Independent, third-party certification focuses on creating consumer demand for sustainably harvested woodand then provides forest landowners and manufacturers who can meet this demand.
Architects
are in a unique position to implement this new vision that balances environmental
and commercial interests. As an architect who specifies FSC-certified wood
and leads by example, you are able to initiate huge changes in the forest
products industry.
Why should you care?
Because no one can afford to ignore the issues of certification and sustainability
any longer. In just the past year this industry has grown exponentially as
major retailers and manufacturers commit to FSC-certified wood. Certification
in not only environmentally friendly, it's also become an important strategic
business consideration.
So come on, be a superhero.
No, were not saying that as an architect youre responsible for saving
the worldjust for doing your part. We have all the information you need
to educate yourself on the issuesand more importantly, we have the resources
to help you find the suppliers that will bring all your projects to fruition.
